The Sixth Day - Part 2

Genesis 1

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

In this second part of Day 6, we learn how God created man and the purpose of man on earth.

Let Us
God expresses Himself here in the plural form. Man is created in God's image. The plural form expressed here cannot refer to angels as Man is not created in the image of angels who are also created beings. If God is talking amongst Himself, this can only refer to the reality of the Trinity Godhead, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The mystery of the Trinity is not regarding three Gods but ONE GOD in three persons. The Godhead is a collection of persons, each distinct and individual but always together as one.

We can already see God the Father in the acts of creation throughout the 6 days. We see God the Holy Spirit in verse 2 and implicitly all over. We see God the Son (the Word) all over the creation acts as God said and it was so. God in three persons are seen in this act of creating Man.

Purpose of Man
The original intent of God creating man is to have dominion over all life that God had made (v26) - the fish of the sea, the fowl of the air, the cattle, the earth and every reptilian beasts. Basically, man is to take charge of all of God's creation on earth. All living creatures are to be subservient to man.

Besides dominion, man is to fill the earth with people (v28). Man is to be fruitful and multiply and to fill (replenish - the then meaning in English, not present day meaning) the earth and take control (subdue) the earth. God made this earth to be populated by man and man is to be responsible to manage and take charge of it.

In the image of God - Male and Female
The Bible is the only book which tells us that God made man in the genders of male and female. It is not by accident but by design and the details of which is found in Genesis 2. This is a definite design and creative act by God. More importantly, man is different from animals. We are specially and wonderfully made in the image of God. We reflect God's characteristics and represent Him to take charge of the creation on earth.

Evolution tells us that by accident, life appears as a protoplasm washed ashore in a primordial soup. This simple life form then evolved into more complex life forms to animal life and then man. We have serious questions without answers:

  • Why are there just two genders that fit so well and not more? If evolution is true, there must be more mutation that will result in many genders and we will have evidence to this but there is none.
  • If man came into being as a random chance, what is our purpose on earth? If evolution is true, man is not responsible or accountable to anyone. There is no purpose in life except to survive and die.
  • When you teach children that they have no meaning in life and is a result of some random accident and they evolved from animals, how can you expect them to be any more than just that?
But God is clear in telling us that it is He who made us specifically male and female. We are responsible for what we have been entrusted and we are accountable to Him, our Creator God. Only in God do we find the real purpose and meaning of our lives. We are made in His image, with a higher purpose, not by chance or accident. And one day, God will judge us.
